Surat Al-Qāri`ah (The Calamity)

  • filter_vintage

This Surah was revealed at Makkah and is one of the early Surahs.Major Issue, Divine Law and Guidance:                                • A scene from the scenes of the Day of Judgement.                                The theme of this Surah is the Resurrection and the Hereafter. The people are warned: "The Great Disaster! What is the Great Disaster? And do you know what the Great Disaster is?" Thus preparing the listeners for the news of the dreadful calamity, then the incident of resurrection is depicted, that on that Day, people will be running around in confusion and bewilderment, just like scattered moths around a light, and the mountains will be uprooted and flung about like carded wool. Then Allah's Court will be established and the people will be called upon to account for their deeds. The people whose scale of good deeds will be heavier than their evil deeds, will be blessed with bliss and happiness, and the people whose good deeds will be lighter than their evil deeds, will be cast into the burning fire of hell.

Prior to the coming of the Hour of universal resurrection, a thunderous sound will erupt that will shake the whole world and be heard by everyone. This is described elsewhere in the Qur’an: “Listen on the Day when the crier will call from near-by; the Day when they [mankind] will hear the fateful cry. That will be the Day they will rise up from their graves” (Qaf(Surah no: 50): 41–42).All shall rise up in fear and anticipation, wondering what is happening. This surah tells us:It is the calamity! What could the calamity be? Would that you knew what the calamity is! It is the Day when people become like scattered moths and the mountains are turned into tufts of carded wool. (1–5)The mountains collapse upon themselves and are reduced to rubble. People are dispersed and scattered like moths in all directions, every- one for himself, not knowing their destiny or destination.Their fate would by then have already been sealed and: “He whose weight [of good works] is heavy in the balance shall dwell in bliss; but [as for] he whose weight is light in the balance, shall plunge in the womb of the Pit” (6–9). The word ‘mother’ is used in the Arabic original metaphorically since, at times of anxiety, one seeks the comfort and security of one’s mother’s bosom. But those whose good works are meager or worthless shall be engulfed by “a scorching fire” (11).
