  • Had We intended to take a diversion, We could have taken it from [what is] with Us - if [indeed] We were to do so.

  • Had it been Our will to find a pastime, We would have found one near at hand; if at all We were inclined to do so.16
    16. That is, this world has been created with a definite purpose and not as a plaything. For, if We had wanted to enjoy a sport, We would have done so without creating a sentient, rational and responsible creature like you. Far be it from Us to put man to trial and conflict for the sake of mere fun.

Had God wanted to indulge in a pastime, He would have chosen something for Himself alone; it would have nothing to do with His mortal creatures. But this is merely a theoretical assumption: “Had We willed to indulge in a pastime, We would indeed have found one near at hand.” (Verse 17) The mode of expression here indicates that both parts of the conditional are negated. God has not willed to indulge in a pastime, and none has taken place. Besides, it never will, because God has not willed it in the first place: “If ever We were to do so!” (Verse 17)

Had We intended to take a pastime, We could surely have taken it from Us, if We were going to do (that).

    ﴿لَوْ أَرَدْنَآ أَن نَّتَّخِذَ لَهْواً لاَّتَّخَذْنَـهُ مِن لَّدُنَّآ إِن كُنَّا فَـعِلِينَ ﴾
(Had We intended to take a pastime, We could surely have taken it from Us, if We were going to do (that).) Ibn Abi Najih said, narrating from Mujahid:
    ﴿لَوْ أَرَدْنَآ أَن نَّتَّخِذَ لَهْواً لاَّتَّخَذْنَـهُ مِن لَّدُنَّآ﴾
(Had We intended to take a pastime, We could surely have taken it from Us,) "Meaning, `From Ourself,' He is saying, `We would not have created Paradise or Hell or death or the resurrection or the Reckoning.'''
    ﴿إِن كُنَّا فَـعِلِينَ﴾
(if We were going to do (that). ) Qatadah, As-Suddi, Ibrahim An-Nakha`i and Mughirah bin Miqsam said: "This means, `We will not do that.''' Mujahid said, every time the word
    ﴿أَنْ﴾
(if) is used in the Qur'an, it is a negation.
